Another very successful lambing this year from our wonderful Ryeland sheep nestling in the middle of Suffolk on our hobby holding. The ideal hornless sheep for the smallholder or for those who would like to keep a couple of sheep on their own ‘small’ acre. Ryelands, originally from Herefordshire are one of England’s oldest native breeds, well known for their teddy bear faces, their placid, easy going and docile character, their small to middle size for ease of handling and their willingness to be ready at the gate ‘almost’ before you have asked them to do anything. A delight to walk amongst without any panic or scatter, they are in essence the perfect sheep. We have kept sheep at Lines Farm since 1990 and moved over to Ryelands in 2011 – in our opinion 21 years late, but have never looked back. Great for presenting at agricultural shows or if you are of the spinning persuasion, then there is nothing quite like the Ryeland Wool, the finest of wools, made famous at the Court of Queen Elizabeth 1 for its fine, dense and springy texture. Often thought of as a rare breed, but here it is the only breed, having provided lambs surplus to our needs throughout much of Southern, Central and Eastern England. A hardy little sheep, able to happily thrive on modest pasture, kept outside all year round and more than capable of lambing in the field.
You are most welcome to visit our little holding and view the sheep and lambs in the field over a cup of coffee or tea and if you are new to sheep we are more than happy to offer advice that we have found useful over the years. We can deliver at a reasonable cost. Lambs will be ready from Mid-July and all are very clean, having been wormed and protected against fly. If anyone is interested in particularly ‘even more’ tame lambs, we have a pair that were bottle fed throughout and are particularly attentive.
