Marine Fish Tank Biological Filter Unit

Here is my custom built Biological Filtration unit. This is designed to sit above/on the water line, either above the tank itself, or above the sump which would be in the cabinet below the tank. The theory is that the 'dirty' water, biologically speaking, which has previously been 'mechanically' cleaned by, maybe, and external canister filter, is input at the top and drips down through the top perforated plate and falls onto the bio media which is predominately in Air, not submerged under water; the idea being that air contains a huge amount more Oxygen than water has Oxygen dissolved in it, and therefore allows the biological bacteria to work much better. To further aid this process, an airstone is placed at the base of the bio ball tower to ensure a steady flow of fully Oxygenated air to replenish that which is used by the biological bacteria living on the bio balls. It has been reported that this method of biological filtering is five times more efficient than submerged bio material, so is able to support a much higher livestock bio load. The unit measures 26cm x 21cm x 26cm tall, or 30cm tall over the inlet pipe.
