Description

ANTIQUE EARLY ROYAL BARUM WARE TERRACOTTA JUG CREAM SLIP GLAZED RIM. BRANNAM NORTH DEVON POTTERY ENGLAND. VICTORIAN KITCHENALIA.

Royal Barum Ware is renowned for quality North Devon art pottery, combing traditional craftsmanship with simple functional forms and strong rustic country cottage character.

This charming practical jug, also called a pitcher, is in a timeless design - which is a feature of the rustic wing of the West Country Art Pottery Movement.

This is a stylish decorative piece, and would blend beautifully with both traditional and modern environments.

This iconic and highly collectable piece of art pottery has a rounded form with a natural matt terracotta body, hand crafted from red Devon clay, and a contrasting pale cream glazed slip rim and handle.

It is still perfectly usable for its intended purpose, and would also look lovely filled with flowers.

Barum is the old name for Barnstaple. Royal Barum Ware originated from the Brannam Pottery in Barnstaple, Devon, founded by Thomas Brannam in 1848. Originally producing bricks and tiles, the firm gained fame when his son, C. H. Brannam, developed artistic sgraffito-decorated and glazed pottery, receiving a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1885 and officially adopting the “Royal Barum Ware” name in 1886. The company then produced high end art pottery for London companies such as Liberty and continued to be run by the family until 1979. The pottery closed in 2005.

As the jug being offered for sale here does not have a maker’s name on the underside it is believed to be a very early, and increasingly rare, Victorian jug produced by the Brannam Pottery prior to 1886.

This is a private sale from a smoke and pet free home. I inherited this jug from my Great Grand Parents, and although it has always been in my family since it was originally purchased I have so many jugs that I have now decided to sell it.

The jug is in very good used antique condition, with no chips or cracks or repairs. As is to be expected given its age, it has minor signs of surface wear. There are also small marks and firing imperfections visible on the terracotta, which are common in pottery from Victorian times and contribute to its character.

Please refer to the photographs provided to make your own assessment regarding condition.

Dimensions: approximately 6.5 cm base diameter x 9.5 by 10.0 cm top x 14.0 cm high.

Buyer to collect, and pay cash on collection please. Regret no returns accepted. Thank you.
