ARTS AND CRAFTS TALL TURNED WOODEN FLOOR LAMP ANTIQUE STANDARD LAMP. VINTAGE LIGHTING. COTTAGECORE.

The charming solid wood antique standard lamp being offered for sale here was lovingly created by a highly skilled craftsman to reflect the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement and is therefore an attractive good quality classic piece typical of the excellent workmanship and timeless style of the Arts and Crafts period, when furniture was made to last and be enjoyed for generations.

This is a reluctant private sale from a pet and smoke free home of this much-loved standard lamp, which was originally purchased by my family in the early 1920’s and is only being sold as we now need the space.

This useful floor standing lamp is nice either as cosy ambient lighting or for task lighting in many places around the home – particularly alongside a chair in a comfy reading nook, or beside a chair or sofa in a living room or bedroom.

The simple clean lines of the tall upright tapered wooden column give the lamp a sophisticated elegant appearance, and are embellished with some traditional hand turned details.

The substantial circular wooden base with three small bun feet underneath ensures the lamp is perfectly stable on the floor.

The design of this stylish practical lamp would look beautiful in either a traditional or modern environment. The colour of the wood and its attractive aged patina would blend in effortlessly with many different decors.

I’m not sure exactly what the wood is. However, it is a hard wood and I believe it is either oak, maple or cherry as these were the most commonly used woods in Arts and Crafts furniture – known for their durability and aesthetic appeal.

This sturdy lamp is approximately 156.0 cm high from the floor to the top of its brass light bulb holder, with a base of approximately 36.0 cm in diameter - which means it is a nice manageable size and hence easy to move around. The diameter of the top most turned feature on the wooden column is approximately 4.8 cm in diameter. The diameter of the bottom on the column, at its widest point, is approximately 6.5 cm.

The lamp is wired and ready to use. (No light bulb or lamp shade is provided.) It has not been PAT tested, although it was working at the time of posting this advertisement.

There is a modern 3 core off white cable (approximately 426.0 cm long) with a standard 3 pin white used plug on the end (containing a 5 amp fuse). The cable could easily be changed should you so wish. Voltage UK mains 240V. The light is turned on and off via a black push switch on the brass bayonet type bulb holder at the top of the wooden column.

This standard lamp is in good antique condition overall. As is to be expected it has age-related wear consistent with use. The wood shows some light surface marks, a few small dents, and variation to the finish. There is a short hairline crack in the wood where the top section of the column is fitted into the bottom section, as well as a similar sign of wear on the circular base. The wood remains very strong, with no repairs, and is free from woodworm.

The Arts and Crafts movement is currently enjoying a renaissance, with people eager to track down original pieces of furniture such as this standard lamp. This opportunity to acquire an original piece in good condition is therefore worth serious consideration – particularly as modern mass produced versions are highly likely to quickly lose their value and are often made from inferior materials.
