It is with a very heavy heart that I have made the decision to look for a new home for Romeo, my much-loved 6-year-old Knabstrupper x Oldenburg. I have owned him since he was just six months old, making this an incredibly difficult decision. He is not far off 16hh, although I haven’t measured him since last year.
Romeo is a lovely horse with plenty of potential for someone willing to give him the time, patience and consistency to continue his education. He has been backed and hacked out and is surprisingly confident for a horse at this stage of his ridden education. However, he has had very limited work over the last 6 months, so he will need someone experienced who is happy to bring him back into a routine and continue his development.
Temperament and handling
Romeo is easy to catch and handle and is good for the farrier. He loads, although he is generally more confident loading into a lorry than a trailer. Following a number of veterinary investigations and treatments over the past six months, he has understandably become more wary of the vet and will benefit from a patient, understanding approach.
He has previously lived happily in a herd and has also adapted surprisingly well to individual turnout. Despite having ad-lib hay available, he has recently developed some food-guarding behaviour, which a prospective home would need to be aware of and manage appropriately.
Health and management
Over the past eight months, Romeo has experienced some health issues, including a bad bout of mud fever and grade 2 gastric ulcers. Thankfully, both issues have now cleared. His vaccinations are up to date, and he receives regular veterinary, farrier and physio care.
His welfare has always been my priority, and I want to ensure that his next home understands his history and can continue providing the appropriate care and management ( can discuss this more over the phone on message)
Finding the right home
This decision has not been taken lightly. Between my demanding paramedic degree and shift work, I have had to be honest with myself about the time I can give Romeo. Having owned him for almost his entire life, I want to make sure he finds someone who can offer him the consistency, patience and purpose he deserves.
I am looking for a knowledgeable, committed home that will allow him to progress at his own pace. I am in no rush to sell and will be prioritising the right home over price.

A very difficult decision, but Romeo’s future and finding him the right home will always come first. ❤️
