Bookmark and Share

When you are driving your car and you start to hear a noise getting louder when you accelerate, then you know the chances are you have a hole or crack in your exhaust pipe. Replacing the whole exhaust system or even one section can be costly, so it’s worth looking to see if you can make the exhaust repairs yourself, using an exhaust repair kit.

Exhaust Repair Kit

The first thing to do is to purchase an Exhaust Repair Kit. Using an Exhaust Repair Kit is the easy and affordable way to repair blow holes and cracks in exhausts, using professional materials and techniques.

These kits contain everything you need to repair damage to your exhaust. They are suitable for repairs between the back box and the tail pipe. Not suitable for use on catalytic converters.

Exhaust repair instructions

Here is a summary of how to carry out plastic scuff and scrape repairs. With step by step instructions you’ll find it easy to repair your exhaust. Full instructions will be included with your Exhaust Repair Kit.

Step 1: Put on protective gloves, read instructions carefully and check all contents before starting repair. Remove any flaking rust from surfaces to be repaired. Abrade the surfaces around the repair using the abrasive paper provided.

Step 2: Using the cleaning wipes provided clean the area to remove dust, dirt and grease. If further cleaning is required, methylated spirits or nail polish remover can be used with a rag. All surfaces must be dry and clean and free from dust. Mix Metal Repair Putty together in the hand by twisting and kneading together until uniform in colour.

Step 3: Press the repair putty into the repair area. Immediately press out flat  until approximately 5-10mm thick. Putty cures in 3-4 minutes.

Step 4: Remove the first 100mm of white backing film from the metal tape. For blow holes, apply the first 100mm of tape directly over the repair and soft putty. Wind the tape tightly around the exhaust until all the tape is used. For cracks, apply the first 100mm of tape directly over the repair and soft putty at a slight angle. Wind the tape tightly around the exhaust over the whole crack overlapping the tape by half it's width until all the tape is used.
