Job Application Tips and Advice

The job application form is something which many people fret and worry over because of its confusing nature, but there's no need to get all worked up about filling it out - if you follow some basic job application tips the dreaded document is a relatively simple. If you are in desperate need of job application help, or simply need some advice on how best to go about filling it out, then have a look at the job application tips we have compiled below.

Job application forms may seem less important that a CV, but a badly filled-out form instantly gives the employer a bad impression of the applicant. If an employer has many job application forms to read through from several applicants then they are likely to immediately put aside any which are incorrectly filled out as a way of whittling down the candidates.

The first thing to do is thoroughly read through the job application form to see what sort of information you need. Also read the instructions for filling out the form if they are included and follow them carefully - if you can't show your potential employer basic instruction-following skills then you haven't got much hope of landing the position. Keep in mind that although most job application forms will ask for the same kind of information, they are not all the same and you may be expected to fill them out in different ways. If you are still worried and need some job application help, then why not first do a practice run - make a copy of the form or just fill it out lightly in pencil.

Perhaps the most important job application tip is to not leave blanks; make sure you fill out all of the information that is asked of you. It is therefore probably a good idea to dig out all of your previous employment records, education details, national insurance number and so on before you go to fill out the form. If you need to fill out the form on-site (i.e. at a jobcentre, or at the company itself) you will clearly need to be prepared and take such documents along with you.

When it comes to writing the job application form, you should obviously try to write as neatly and legibly as possible and check your spelling, particularly the names of the company, position and people to which you are applying. Make sure the information you put down is correct and consistent with other documents which you will have to provide to the employer - for example, make sure previous dates and periods of employment are the same on the form as on your CV. The best way to be consistent is to be absolutely honest - employers are usually well experienced at seeing through an applicant who has been 'liberal' with the truth.

The final job application form tip is to check it, recheck it and check it again. Read through the form several times after filling it out to check for spelling or grammatical mistakes and other inaccuracies and make sure you have left nothing blank. This way, once you have sent it off you won't be worrying about whether you filled it in correctly.
