Find the perfect job or perfect career
Choosing the job that's right for you
Once you settle on a career you will clearly be spending most of your days doing that job,
so its fairly important that you find the right job. Much is said about the elusive
'perfect career', but in reality
finding a perfect job is going to be very difficult.
You can, however, ensure that you make a career choice that will keep you stimulated and find a job that,
most of the time at least, makes you happy. No one can guarantee you happiness in a job, and you will
inevitably face difficulties in any job you pursue, but here is some simple advice which may just help you to
find a new career that is right for you.
The most obvious way to tell if a job is right for you is enjoyment, are you going to enjoy doing that job? As you haven't yet got
the job it will clearly be difficult to tell, but if you get enjoyment out of just talking about a job or about the industry involved,
then this could be the right job for you. Choosing a job which interests you is far more likely to bring you happiness in your career.
It is important to have in your head a clear idea of what you want to do - don't just wander into a job because it sounds 'alright'.
It can't be stressed enough just how important it is to thoroughly research the specific job and the industry as a whole.
This will give you a general idea of the sorts of things you may have to do in that post and the type of issues you may come up against
and help you find the right job. If you know any one, possibly friends or family, who is or has previously been involved in a similar job
then there insights will prove invaluable. Ask them everything about what they do or did in the job and how they enjoyed it. Also ask them
what the bad points of the job were. Bear in mind though, not everyone enjoys the same sorts of things, so someone else's perfect job may
not be yours.
It may be possible to do an internship, apprenticeship, job-shadowing or some
voluntary work in the career area which you are considering.
If so this is by far the best way to ascertain whether that new career will be right for you and will give you a valuable insight
into the types of things you may be expected to do in that job.
As a final piece of advice, just remember that whilst choosing a job is an important process, no decision is forever and you can always
change paths if you find that it isn't the perfect job. Don't be one of the many people go through their lives unhappy in their work -
there are thousands of careers out there and whilst finding a truly perfect job or perfect career may prove difficult, finding one which
you enjoy is not too hard at all.
