Which dog is right for you?

If you’re thinking about buying a dog you will know that they come in all shapes and sizes and every breed has its own personality traits – good and bad, that you need to be aware of. Below are details of a few of the most popular breeds of dogs and what you can expect if you decide to buy or adopt one.

Labrador
Labradors are known for being brilliant family dogs; they love exercise and they are gentle by nature so are well behaved around children. They need more than just your standard walk around the streets, Labradors by in large love nothing more than a good game of fetch and the odd swim here and there so be prepared to take them to a variety of places.
These dogs do chew though – and they will chew anything; remote controls, shoes, and cameras – unless you train them out of the habit quickly you could find yourself having to replace a lot of possessions! Destructive chewing tends to occur when they are bored or confined for periods of time.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
These poor dogs get a bad rap; people assume they are aggressive and mean because for some reason they have been associated as status symbols for a lot of owners that train them for fighting and protection. Staffordshire bull terriers, by nature, are some of the most soppy and loving dogs out there – unfortunately irresponsible ownership has tarnished their reputation. Staffs are impulsive and energetic – they live by the ‘why walk when you can run?’ motto – so you’ll be kept on your toes.
They can be a little whiney, especially as they get older, as they are loyal to their owners and love affection they do get lonely if you’re out for long periods of time.
Dachshund (Sausage dog)
Charming; loyal, lively and pretty funny to look at – this is the sausage dog. They have a calm yet inquisitive personality by nature and will love you to the world and back. These comical dogs love playing games; they are very clever though and will try to trick you if it means they can get away with something naughty!
The downside to the Sausage dog is that they are prone to back problems – they are pretty out of proportion after all – so you have to make sure they don’t jump off the sofa without a helping hand as they might hurt themselves. You also have to be very careful with their weight; their legs are so short that if they get too fat they’re poor tummy will be dragging along the floor – and he really don’t love you for that, neither will the vet.
