Update your wardrobe for cheap

With every new season comes an overwhelming urge to go out and blow your whole payslip on a new wardrobe; before you reach for the ‘extend overdraft’ button or apply for yet another credit card just take a step back and think about what you already have. There are ways to update your wardrobe without spending a fortune.

The first step to updating your wardrobe is to see what you’ve already got; this doesn’t mean a quick flick through your wardrobe this means pulling everything out, trying it on, and sorting through it.
It’s amazing how many people go out and buy stuff and come home to find they’ve already got something just like it shoved in the back of their wardrobe. We are habitual by nature so the chances of you duplicating dresses and doubling up on tops is pretty high.
Once you actually know what you own you have a good starting point to begin updating your stuff; there’s no getting away from this next bit – you need to learn to sew, even if it’s just the basics, you’re not going to get much done if you can’t hem a pair of trousers.
Don’t run away screaming just yet, sewing is surprisingly easy, and most modern sewing machines do all the hard work for you – all you need to do is keep your foot on the peddle and try not to stitch your thumbs together.
Knowing how to sew will mean that clothes that are too big can be altered; missing buttons can be replaced, sleeves can be removed and embellishment can be added.
You need to think like a stylist – they can make outfits out of nothing, so at least you’ve got a head start. If skirts are big in this season then alter your dresses; trousers can become shorts, jackets can be waist coats and so on.
You may find that you have to buy just one or two new items to really update your wardrobe if you are particularly fashion conscious but the likely hood that most of your stuff can just be tweaked a little to make it more current is quite high – fashion doesn’t change drastically between seasons it just tends to be shapes and colours – so if your wardrobe is quite neutral accessorize with the current seasons colours and before you know it you’ll be catwalk ready once again.
