Understand guinea pigs noises
Guinea pigs make lots of noise, as any guinea pig owner will know. To the trained ear, each different squeak can mean a different thing. You may not be able to speak guinea pig, but this article could help you understand the different noises your guinea pig makes.
‘Wheeking’ is perhaps the most commonly heard of the various guinea pig noises. A sort of long squeak or whistle, wheeking means your guinea pig is feeling excited, probably about getting fed! It can also be a call for attention when you walk past – guinea pigs need cuddles too, after all.
Guinea pigs can mate like rabbits so watch out if you’ve got a male and female kept together and you hear a rumbling sound. This very deep purr often means your guinea pigs are in the mood for love. This guinea pig noise is often accompanied by a mating dance.
If the purring is a bit quieter than a rumble, it probably means your guinea pig is feeling pretty comfortable and contented with its life. Keep an ear out though: if the purr sounds quite high pitched at the end, it could mean your guinea pig is tense and just a bit fed up.
The more agitated guinea pig could be heard chattering its teeth. Often paired with a showing of teeth, this is the most aggressive of the guinea pig noises. Guinea pigs making these noises have had enough and want to be left alone.
Not many pets enjoy going to the vets and the guinea pig is no exception. And they’re not afraid to make their displeasure heard either! If you’re guinea pig is having an injection, or is not enjoying being poked and prodded by a vet, you might hear a shrieking sound. You won’t be surprised to learn that this means your guinea pig is in pain.
A more pleasant noise to hear is the cooing sound that mother guinea pigs make when they are around their babies. This noise, similar to human communication with babies, is to soothe the young and reassure them that all is well.
And there you have it! Guinea pig noises 101. Could it be worth trying to speak guinea pig yourself?
