Top Tips for designing a TV room

If your favourite way of relaxing at the end of a long day at work is to recline in front of your TV and watch a few hours of your favourite programs then you want to be doing it in a relaxing environment.

If you never use your dining room for anything other than keeping a dining table or storing household junk then this could be the perfect space for your very own TV room.
Of course the key to having a good TV room is to centre everything around the TV – if you have a rectangular shaped room the best thing to do is to attach the TV to one of the more narrow walls – this will allow you to make full use of the length of the room and will stop you getting neck ache if your TV is particularly large.
The mood in your TV room needs to be adaptable; so before you get carried away with fancy chairs and drinks holders think about the lighting. Spot lights are best if they are attached to a dimmer switch. Up-lighters on two of the long walls would also be suitable but these again should be attached to a dimmer switch – this will enable you to create soft lighting if you wish.
Once you have the lighting under control it’s time to think about curtains – as your TV is placed on one of the narrow walls it is likely that the opposite narrow wall has some kind of window or patio door on it – this will do nothing but cause glare on the screen which will reduce your viewing pleasure so purchase some double lined curtains in a heavy and relatively dark coloured fabric so you can shut the world out whilst your watching your favourite movies.
The colours of the walls in your TV room can be whatever you like; but the best ones have calming and pastel colours added so that when the lights are dimmed it creates a nice and relaxed atmosphere.
Once you’ve done the basics and sorted out the lights and the decorating you can begin to think about furniture. In terms of chairs it is a good idea to have a small two seater sofa in there as well as a couple of reclining armchairs – this way if you’ve –planned a romantic night in you can use the sofa and if you’re having friends round you can relax in the reclining chairs with a glass of wine or a beer.
Another essential piece of furniture for your TV room is a narrow cabinet to place below the TV; this will serve as storage space for DVD’s and games consoles such as the Playstation or Xbox 360, this will also help to keep wires hidden.
In terms of electrical you might want to purchase a decent speaker system and have one placed in each corner of the room as this will enhance your home cinema experience and enable you to watch your favourite TV programs in style.
And finally; no TV room would be complete without a small fridge to house beer, wine and snacks – this is an absolute must for any TV junkie and will finish off your new room perfectly.
