Top tips: Arranging your bedroom furniture
Whether you’re in a luxurious master bedroom or you’re stuck in the box room, knowing what to do with your bedroom furniture is vital to make the most of the space you have. Have a look at some of the ideas below to make the most of the space you’ve got and create a space that is truly your own
Think carefully about your bed
The bed is often the focal point of the bedroom and a lot of people’s favourite item of furniture. Place it properly and it can look fantastic. It’s a good idea, if possible, to make sure the bed is not against an outside wall. That way, it won’t be so exposed to the outside elements. Feeling adventurous? Why not have a go at making your bed stand out from the rest of the bedroom furniture by making your own headboard. If that sounds a bit scary, you could have a go at painting the existing headboard in exciting colours. Remember this is where you sleep though – steer clear of really busy designs if you think they’ll give you a headache after a while.
Create a sense of balance
Try and put an eye-catching piece of furniture against the wall opposite your bed. A beautiful chest of drawers with an elegant mirror, or even something simple like a computer desk. This will add an element of symmetry to the space and help tie all the pieces of furniture in the room together.
Stand tall
You can make the most of a small room by using the height available. By purchasing items of tall furniture, wardrobes for example, you can get more storage for your floor space.
Think outside the box
If you think your room is a little plain and you don’t have a gorgeous antique armoire or a cool contemporary headboard, don’t panic! Hunt around for some stylish fabric and hang it behind the bed to create a focal point for a comparatively small price. Soft furnishings can go a long way when trying to make a space your own, so don’t worry if your wallet won’t stretch to a whole room full of new furniture.
Access, access, access
Your bedroom is a haven and, of course, should look as best as it can. However, looks only go so far – if you can’t open the door, then what’s the point? Make sure there is sufficient space for draws and doors to open and enough floor space to get around. Before buying or altering any bedroom furniture, take accurate measurements of the space you have available. That way, you won’t have any nasty surprises when you get the wardrobe delivered.
