The Pros & Cons of Buying Organic over Local

There are so many reasons to choose organic produce over local. They mostly however boil down to pesticides and chemicals that are used to grow standard non-organic foods. So here are some pros for buying organic.

It's healthy
On average, organic food contains higher levels of vitamin and essential minerals.

No nasty additives
Only 32 of the 290 food additives approved for use across the EU are permitted in organic food. Like monosodium glutamate that has been linked with diseases.

Avoids pesticides
The best way of reducing your exposure to potentially harmful pesticides is to eat organically grown food, where their use is avoided. Over 311 pesticides can be routinely used in non organic farming.

Reliance on drugs removed
Antibiotic additives routinely added to animal food to speed animal growth are linked with bacterial resistance in humans to the same or closely related antibiotics. Soil Association standards ban the routine use of antibiotics.

High standards
Organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year.

Care for animals
No system of farming has higher levels of animal welfare standards than organic.

Good for wildlife and the environment

Overall organic farming supports more farmland wildlife than non-organic farming.

But there are arguments against as well. They are as follows:

The word pesticide is a very loaded word. When we hear it we immediately think of poison and illness, but that’s not the case with all pesticides. Arguments for (even this one) will say that organic reduces your exposure to ‘potentially harmful’ pesticides. This are misleading statements and the opposite can also be true. It’s also not true that organic foods are not treated with pesticides. They are but, contact is kept to a minimum.

Although organic claims to be better for the environment that isn’t strictly true either. They still use all the same machinery, they still use manure and compost in the soil which can stagnate and affect natural water bodies like rivers. After all manure and compost are biodegrading wastes.

Other arguments go along the lines of the taste of organic and non-organic are practically the same and people in blind tests can rarely tell the difference. Lastly is the cost. Organic food is notoriously more expensive and although they argue that you pay for the food you get and not the chemicals it doesn’t go very far towards easing the sting in your pocket.
