How to grow your own vegetables
It’s time to start tackling the weeds, sowing seeds and planting your vegetable plot. Beware the weather can still be unpredictable so remember to keep an eye on the forecast for frost warnings and cover new seedling with fleece or newspapers. Don’t forget fruit blossom also needs protection from frost, but do not prevent the insects access for pollination.
10 Top Tips for this Month
- As the weather gets warmer the weeds start to appear. Weeding is very important at this time, hoeing is a good way to deal with annual weeds. Perennial weeds need either digging out or use a weed killer, you will find one suitable for your requirements at Sussex Country Gardener. Remember to sharpen your hoe or spade before you start!!
- Warmer weather also means the aphids start to multiply, remove them by hand or spray with water. Don’t forget to check strawberries for red spider mite and treat as necessary.
- To trap in the moisture and help prevent drying out in the summer cover the beds with a layer of mulch. Sussex Country Gardener can supply mulch and compost to suit all your needs.
- Sow seed outdoors in well prepared soil for root crops such as beetroot, carrots, onions, leeks, also peas, chard and perpetual spinach.
- Sow seed indoors for marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squash, peppers, aubergines. There is a great selection of all these seeds at Sussex Country Gardener to choose from.
- Potatoes. Chit and plant second early potatoes in the first half of the month, main crop potatoes in the second half.
- Tomato seedlings. When the seedlings have develop two or four true leaves above the more rounded seed leave, pot the seedling on into individual 7cm pots. Alternatively come along and choose your seedling tomatoes from the wide selection of varieties in store.
- Asparagus Crowns. Plant one-year old crowns 30-45cm apart in rows 45cm apart.
- Plant shallots, onion sets and garlic. Aphids are repelled by the scent of garlic, top tip - try planting some in amongst your roses.
- Finally now is the time to give hedges a trim into shape. Once they have had a trim, water and mulch around them.
