Supporting your local business

Supporting your local business

Using your local businesses and shopping at your local stores is a great way to do your bit for your local community - at the same time as ticking things off your shopping list! From trades people to coffee shops and from farm shops to retail outlets, there are local businesses all across the UK.

These local businesses are very important for supporting the local community and providing consistent revenue to the local economy. Keeping these businesses alive can help to maintain a wide choice of local products and services right on our doorsteps.

Here are just some of the benefits of going local.

Business relationships

There is no substitute for building local business relationships. Being able to arrange deals face-to-face and being able to pop into a local business' premises at any time, to discuss any problems, or just look through the products or services they can offer you, is a great benefit of going local. Why get stuck on hold on the phone when you can just pop round the corner and call in?

Environmental
Keeping everything local also has a positive environmental factor. There is a very good mantra, ‘Think global, act local’, which environmental campaigners use to reflect the ecological sense of goods travelling less distance, leaving less carbon footprint behind. This also makes good business sense as goods travelling a smaller distance means that there is less risk involved during transportation - and hopefully less money!

Working together
Being able to build up local relationships also opens opportunities for local businesses to work together for mutual benefit - a clever marketing tactic, you might say. Local service providers or shops could team up with other relevant, but not competing, companies to help entice customers to go local.  For example, a local wedding florist could team up with a wedding photographer and a hire car company to produce their strategy. Or, on a simpler note, arrangements could be made for one business to display adverts in a shop front in return for them doing the same.

The local community
Local companies are likely to know their customers and their area better than any national chain. This can help customers feel more valued and perhaps even more willing to divulge their custom. We’re all used to supporting our local public house - now it is time to branch out and support all locally run businesses!
