Summer holidays in Sussex

It’s that time of year when kids across the county are getting more and more excited about six weeks off school, while parents get a bit anxious about finding things to keep the little treasures entertained. Sussex has loads of things on offer to keep those mischievous hands busy. Check out our guide to some of the activities and things to do during this year’s summer holidays in Sussex.

Drusillas Park, Alfriston
This summer, Drusillas Park has loads on offer for the kids. On Tuesday 26th July, everyone is invited to take part in the Zoolympics Challenge Day. Test your athletic skills against those of the animal kingdom and record your progress in your very own book. The very next day (Wednesday 27th July), the enchantment of Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom will be cast over Drusillas, giving children the chance to enjoy some meet and greet magic. August is Peppa Pig Month (Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2nd – 24th August), giving kids in Sussex to have fun with Peppa and her brother George as they embark on an adventure around the Park. For more information about any of the events at Drusillas Park during the summer holidays, visit the Drusillas Park website or call 01323 874100.

Fantastic Mr Fox at Goffs Park

3rd August 2011
This fantastic family production at the Hawth, Crawley, is from Illyria – the same company that brought Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach to the stage last year. Follow the antics of the Fantastic Mr Fox as he tries to feed his family, much to the despair of farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Tickets for this open air production cost £12 each and families are invited to bring along their own picnics to enjoy before the show. To book your tickets or to find out more information, head to the Hawth website.

The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux

Kicking off with the weekend Festival of Chemistry (Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st July), Herstmonceux’s summer calendar is jam packed. The Curious about Chemistry show includes stands with fun activities, fantastic chemistry science shows, drop-in experiment stations and award-winning FORENSICS workshops. Throughout the holidays (25th July – 29th August 2011) there will be daily telescope tours and the new ‘Materials’ science show, as well ass the normal hands-on exhibits. Check out the drop-in activities in the Zany Zone (Mondays throughout August), the living in space workshops (2nd & 3rd August), the Rocketry workshops (9th & 10th August), the K’NEX construction workshops (25th August) and much, much more. Some of these events cost more than the normal admission price, so for ticket prices and a full list of activities, head to the Observatory Science Centre website.

Airbourne

11th – 14th August 2011
Once again, the world’ biggest seafront airshow will be taking over Eastbourne this August. Airbourne offers four days of flying displays on Eastbourne seafront, including the Red Arrows, the Blades, and many other flying displays from the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy, the British Army and civilian aircraft. This year, Airbourne has ramped up its production, with all the action transmitted live on four big screens. The screens will be situated on the beach near the Bandstand, on the Western Lawns and in the Town Centre, broadcasting the live pictures accompanied by special commentary and interviews. The footage will also be streamed through the Airbourne website.

Worthing International Birdman competition

13th and 14th August 2011
The Birdman is a flight competition for human powered flying machines, held every summer on Worthing Pier. Spectators can watch from the beach to the west of the Pier for free, whilst the event will also be televised from large screens. With three different classes of entries, competitors can take part to raise money for their chosen charities, or compete for the distance prizes. Should one birdman achieve over a flight of over 100 metres, £10,000 is up for grabs. Find out more at the Birdman website.

And this guide has only told you about some of the organised events! If you’re looking for something a bit more spontaneous, then check out our guide to the top 10 things to do in Sussex this summer – with information on everything from days at the beach to exploring the countryside.
