Summer gardening ideas

Summer is here and that means it’s time to embrace flowers in your garden. Whether it’s bedding plants, hanging baskets or beautiful rose bushes, there’s lots to keep those green fingers busy.

Early summer, believe it or not, is the time to think of your winter plants. It may seem like a long time away now is a great time to sow seeds of perennial plants and winter bedding plants outdoors. Make sure you check on any trees and shrubs you planted last winter are well-watered and not suffering in dry periods. Be sensible with that watering can though – there is very little point in watering any of your garden in the midday sun because so much will be lost through evaporation – it’s best to wait until the sun starts going down before you raid that water butt.

Sumer gardens wouldn't be the same without colour coming from every corner. Summer-flowering perennials will be showing off their beauty as much as they possibly can. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy all the time you’ve spent gardening, whether it be around the pond or in laid out beds. It’s also a great time to take stock, and think about how the arrangement of your plants could be improved. Some flowers obviously are more eye-catching than others. If you like your blooms dainty but voluptuous, then a clematis is a great way to go, with it’s abundance of sweet-smelling flowers.

Summer is also the time for roses. Although formal rose gardens may have gone out of fashion a bit, a rose bush can usually be found somewhere in many gardens. Shrub roses are particularly popular, as well as patio roses which are perfect for pots. Keep your roses looking their best by deadheading them at least once a week and make sure they’ve got plenty of water to drink. Now is the perfect time to start looking for new additions for your collection!

Perhaps the most important thing to remember in your garden this summer is to enjoy it.
Although you’ll be busy pruning and feeding, what’s the point in all your hard work if you don’t sit back and tack stock every now and then? Don’t forget to grab a chair and a drink and make the most of the fruits of your labour every now and then.

If you are looking for some equipment to help you with your green fingered agenda (or to help you sit back and relax) then check out the Friday-Ad gardening section for thousands of gardening items and garden furniture for sale.
