Preparing for college
Once GCSE’s are over and compulsory education is a thing of the past, a lot of teenagers choose to continue their education at college. This could mean studying AS and A Levels, or something more vocational like carpentry or beauty therapy. Whichever route you choose, chances are you will be attending a further education college.
Some larger schools in the country have a Sixth Form college on their campus. Choosing to go to such a Sixth Form is probably a bit less daunting than heading to a separate further education college. If you are about to go to a separate college, there are a number of things you can do to help prepare yourself for the big change.
Although you will still be in education, many colleges are very different to schools. Chances are you will have a few free periods a week, which are designed to give you time to do extra curricular activities and to catch up with your homework. So it’s a good idea to develop your time management skills before you start. Invest in a diary or planner, so you can write down your timetable and plan your week. This will make it easier for you to meet deadlines and help prevent you from getting overwhelmed.
Another thing to do to prepare yourself for college is to make sure you have the right equipment. Most subjects will have a recommended book list – whether they are texts for reference or novels that will be studied throughout the course. If you have received a book list from your college in advance, be sure to have them with you at each of the respective first lessons. If you’re studying something more vocational, you may need to purchase the appropriate tools or equipment in advance. If you’re not sure what you need for your first lessons, then you can always give your college a ring to be sure.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is to not get too worried about it all! Further education and vocational training can seem daunting at first but it’s important to remember why you’re doing it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or for more help if you think you need it – that’s what your teachers and instructors are there for, after all.
