Olympic events in Sussex and the South East

Olympic events in Sussex and the South EastLondon 2012 is just around the corner and there are plenty of cultural and sporting events in Sussex to get you in the mood for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. From Olympic torch relay celebrations to the Big Boat Project, there are plenty of ways to play your part in the Olympic celebrations in Sussex. Here’s our pick of just five of the events happening in Sussex in the coming months.

The Olympic Torch Relay
The Olympic Torch will be travelling through Sussex in July 2012 as part of its 70 day journey around the whole country before arriving at the London 2012 Olympic site. The Olympic Torch relay will give you, the people of Sussex, the chance to glimpse the torchbearers for yourself as it continues on its epic journey. Each night, the hosting town will also hold an evening celebration to mark the occasion. Brighton and Hove will be hosting its evening celebration on Monday 16 July and its Hastings’ turn to celebrate the following day. For more information, visit the Olympic Torch relay website.

The Big Boat Project
A fantastic 30 ft sailing boat made of hundreds of donated wooden objects set sail from Emsworth at the beginning of May. To celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the boat will be travelling along the South Coast calling at various ports along the way. Having spent time in Brighton in May as part of the Brighton Festival 2012, the boat will head further along the coast throughout June and July. Some 1,200 wooden donations have been used to create the boat, including a piece of the Mary Rose, a sliver of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar and a piece of Brighton Pier. For more information on the Big Boat Project and its voyage, visit the Big Boat Project website.

Ahead of the Game Festival
West Sussex’s Ahead of the Game festival takes place between July and September 2012. Various venues across West Sussex will host a programme of cultural events inspired by and celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Events include the Blue Touch Paper Carnival, which brings both able-bodied and disabled people together to create an accessible and enjoyable carnival for all, plus much more. For more information, visit the Ahead of the Game Festival 2012 website.

Big Dance 2012
Big Dance 2012 is set to be the UK’s biggest celebration of dance in all its magnificent forms. Although events will be happening as part of the Big Dance 2012 all over the country, the programme is essentially part of the London 2012 Festival, which in turn is the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. In Sussex and the rest of the south east, there will be various dance classes and displays held to help celebrate the event. For more information about what’s on in the south east, visit the Big Dance website.

Watch the Olympics on the big screen
Throughout the London 2012 Olympic Games, residents and visitors to Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells can watch the action live on a big screen. Enjoy coming together with the whole community to cheer the athletes on – it’s the closest thing to actually being in the Olympic village yourself. Head down to Princes Park in Eastbourne or Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells throughout the duration of the Games to be part of the action.

To find out what else is happening in both East and West Sussex to celebrate the Olympics, head over to the London 2012 website.
