Make your home and garden eco-friendly

Make your home and garden eco-friendlyMaking your home and garden eco-friendly can help you focus on both your own pleasures of DIY and gardening whilst making an effort to reduce your environmental impact. So as the drastic effects of climate change are felt across the world, both governments and individuals are starting to take action in making themselves far more eco-friendly, but what can you do in the house and in the garden to make your home more environmentally-friendly?

In the home
There is plenty to be done in your house to make it more eco-friendly. Firstly, you need to make sure that you are doing the simple things that can make a big impact.  One thing we should all be doing is turning appliances off when they are not in use and turning off lights when you are not in the room. Another thing which seems trivial, but makes a huge difference, is using the microwave instead of the oven when cooking small meals. Your microwave uses much less energy than your oven.

You can also go to greater lengths, the obvious one is to get your house properly insulated. If you can get your walls, water heater and pipes insulated then that can help you not only make your house more eco-friendly but it will also help save you money in the long run. You should also try and use your heating and air conditioning less, which will be made much easier if you get your house insulated.

Other smaller things which you can look into include, having your leaky refrigeration systems repaired, use energy efficient light bulbs and you can always take showers instead of long baths.

In the garden
So, once you have ensured your home is as eco-friendly as can be, you can move outside and into the garden. If you provide habitats for wildlife in your garden then you can work with nature in combatting disease and pests whilst ensuring your garden is more sustainable and healthier. You can create a log pile in the corner as a space for small mammals to hide, you can build a pond as a place for animals to drink and bathe and you can set aside a small area to grow wild flowers, which can be important food plants for a range of wild insects.

Compost bins are amazing ways to recycle the food rubbish you throw away as well as creating a wonderful compost to use around your garden. You can use vegetable peelings, food that has gone off, egg shells and old tea bags to make a rich compost which will provide your garden with loads of nutrients. And it will prevent all of these ‘waste’ products from being sent to landfill.

Growing your own food is another way to cut down on your carbon footprint. If you grow your own vegetables then you are reducing the ammount of packaging you would normally amass from a trip to the supermarket. You can not only increase the eco-friendliness of your day to day life, but you can also have fun and eat some of the freshest and tastiest food for minimal effort.
