Ideas for decorating your child’s bike

Ideas for decorating your child's bikeAs a child, your first bike is often a thing of pride and joy. Learning to ride a bike is great fun for kids and parents alike. Help make your child’s bike even more special by adding the personal touch. A lot of these ideas can be done with the help of your little one as well.

Give your bike its own number plate
Kids can be just like dad in his car and have their very own bike number plate. Easy to make and easy to remove once the kids have gone off the idea, cardboard number plates are great fun and really cheap. Come up with a clever number plate for you bike using a mixture of numbers and letters, for example, ‘S4R4H’ for Sarah’s bike, or ‘MARK1’ for Mark’s. Write and design your plate on some paper, cut it out, and stick it to a cardboard backing. Punch a couple of holes in the top and tie the number plate securely to the bike’s saddle with some string.

Make your own streamers
Colourful streamers are the stalwart of kids’ bike decorating. Get some colourful strips of fabric, paper, plastic or whatever you can get your hands on and simply tape them to your handlebars – the brighter the better! If the handlebars of the child’s bike have hole in the end, you can fasten the streamers on the inside of the handlebars to make them look even better. Streamers like this are easily replaceable too, so if the bike gets left out in the rain – it’s not the end of the world.

Give the bike a lick of paint
If you want to permanently change the colour of your child’s bike, spray painting the bike a colour of their choice is a great idea. This works really well with second-hand bikes, giving you the opportunity to buy a bargain bike and still give your son or daughter the bike of their dreams. Spray paints come in pretty much every colour under the sun so the options are endless. If you’re not sure which type of paint is suitable to use on the bike, ask someone at your local DIY or bike store – they should be able to help.

Stickers, stickers, stickers

If painting sounds a bit too drastic, another way to decorate your child’s bike is by using stickers. These can be removed fairly easily if your son or daughter decides they don’t like them anymore, and come pretty cheap in various kids’ shops. Kids will love sticking the stickers themselves and the way the bike looks when it’s all finished.
