How to tow your caravan

how to tow your caravanBuying your first caravan is the first step towards happiness. But once you have purchased it and chosen your destination you still have to make sure you can safely tow it from A to B.

It can be a daunting task, I mean before you set on a long journey you need to plan correctly and then dive in at the deep end and get towing. There is no training, it is a ‘learn by doing’ kind of thing. So hopefully these pieces of advice that I offer you will help you on your journey.

Before you set off
I do believe it was Benjamin Franklin who once said: “failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” Now when it comes to towing a caravan this famous sound bite couldn’t be truer.

You should always do a final maintenance and safety check, especially if you have left your caravan standing for a long time. Another thing to check is that your caravan’s load is correctly distributed and firmly secured; you don’t want it coming unattached during your drive. The lights should also be checked, are they undamaged and working correctly? If so then you are all set. Blast off!

On the road
Your vehicle will be affected by the fact that it is towing a caravan. There is no escaping that my friend, but you can do certain things to compensate for this and in doing so you can do your best to avoid an accident.

When you are moving off from a stationary position it will take a lot more effort as you are towing a substantially larger amount of weight. You should also remember that when arriving at junctions or pulling out of them, it will take a lot longer than usual to speed up or slow down.

And the last thing to remember is that it will be a lot trickier to negotiate sharp bends. You should take extra care because you don’t want to jack-knife.

Well done
So you have made it! That is good news, as long as you did it safely and managed not to annoy every driver within 100 miles of you. I hope these small tips help you when it comes to the big day and I also hope that you enjoy your holiday once you arrive and don’t spend the entire time dreading the long journey home.
