How to make toys for your Guinea pigs

Guinea pigs love nothing more than being entertained; especially when it involves toys and food. Don’t let their funny squeaking fool you, they are pretty clever little things and they need stimulation to prevent boredom and loneliness setting in.

By nature, Guinea pigs prefer to be kept in pairs; they’re very sociable and like rabbits can get lonesome and depressed without a partner in crime. You’d probably be depressed too if you were stuck in a hutch all day with nobody to talk to and nothing to play with.
Making sure your Guinea pigs are kept happy and entertained doesn’t have to cost the world; in fact it can be quite the opposite, lots of household rubbish and recycling can be turned into fun and safe toys for your Guinea pigs to play with.
Take toilet roll tubes for example; natural and organic, toilet roll tubes are completely safe and can provide hours of entertainment for your demanding little friend. Instead of recycling them all or chucking them out, keep a few back to give to your Guinea pigs.
You’ll find they enjoy nibbling round the edges and pushing the tube all over the hutch – might look simple to you but they happen to find it quite fun.
Take a show box or a small cardboard box and cut little door holes or circles out of it and place it upside down in your Guinea pigs play area. This is a great place for the Guinea pigs to hide if they’re in their playpen and feeling a little shy. Cutting window holes means they can peek out without having to come outside.
This is good for them in the summer if you let your Guinea pigs play outside the hutch and have a run around as they’ll always have some guaranteed shade.
Larger tunnels can be made out of cardboard tubs; simply remove the plastic lid and cut out the bottom and your Guinea pigs will have hours of fun chasing each other through the tunnel.
If your Guinea pig has let himself go a bit and is looking a little podgy round the edges you need to be careful that he doesn’t get stuck. To do this just cut along the length of the tube – it will still ping back into shape but if your little porker gets stuck half way through, the tunnel will be flexible enough for him to escape.
