How to make room for a baby

How to make room for a babyIf you’re having your first child, it can be difficult to know how to make room for a baby in your home. We aren’t all lucky enough to be blessed with luxurious homes offering endless storage space. If it looks like you might have to think outside the box to make room for your new baby then check out the article below, which offers a few top tips to help you save space and give everyone enough room to breathe.

Think vertically
If floor space is limited, it’s time to start thinking vertically rather than horizontally. Opt for storage solutions that run from floor to ceiling. These will offer a great deal of room to put all your baby equipment without taking up too much floor space. It also means you’ll have ample options when it comes to putting things out of reach of baby.

Don’t give up on sloped ceilings

If you live in a room with sloped ceilings, it doesn’t mean that the whole area can’t be used. If you’re handy with a hammer and some wood, you could construct some shelves or cubby holes that fix onto the slopes, adding extra space. Someone at your local DIY store should be able to advise you as to which materials and tools are best for this. If you’re unsure what’s safe to use and what’s not, it’s best to double check. Who knows what could happen if one of your cubby holes falls down.

Boxes, boxes, boxes
Some things, either yours or baby’s, you will want to keep out of sight when not in use, but will need regular access to. For items like this (clean nappies, toys etc), boxes are often a great solution. Whilst cardboard boxes will do the job temporarily, there are plenty of decorative boxes out there that add style to your room and are functional too. Some are even collapsible for when you are not using them at all. These nifty little things can help solve the interior design vs storage battle pretty well!

Adapt the furniture you already have

It goes without saying that having a baby will mean investing in all sorts of equipment, clothes, toys, food and even furniture. But that doesn’t mean that everything you already own has to go out of the window. Part of making room for a baby is learning to adapt what you already have in your life. Things like changing mats that fit on top of chest-of-drawers will help you save space. You could also devote one of the drawers to your baby equipment, like baby lotion, nappies and wet wipes. That way, with the changing mat, you’ve got everything you need in one place.

Don’t give up on the idea of having your own space
Making room for a baby doesn’t have to mean your home can’t offer you your own areas anymore. If you’re lucky enough to have a fairly large room, you can create separate areas – one baby-central, one grown-up central. This means, that when baby is sleeping, you’ll be able to relax with a book and a cup of tea, and not be surrounded by toys and rattles. If you separate the room with a bookcase or shelving unit, you’ll still be able to keep an eye on him or her, whilst still being in your own space.
