How to Look After Cats

How to Look After Cats
Looking after cats can be a very rewarding experience. They are much more independent than dogs and don’t require as much daily contact or being taken for walks. Caring for cats is often simpler; as long as they have food and a good place to sleep they will often always come home. Cats still do need some human interaction however and this guide outlines how to go about keeping cats.

Caring For Cats

• Always make sure that your cat has all the care it requires. Part of caring for cats is to make sure they have the correct food intake and diet. The correct weight for a cat is it’s weight at one year old. Their diet should consist of less than 10% fat and should contain all the other elements such as a high protein and high fibre content.

• Cats need plenty of exercise. Even though they don’t need taking out for walks like dogs do, you need to provide them with the opportunity to exercise. Make sure when looking after cats that they have access to go outside and exercise. If it is an indoor cat, you need to keep them mentally stimulated so that they don’t spend too much of their time sleeping and being inactive.

• Cats are quite intelligent and if they become bored may become destructive or even aggressive. Playing with the cat with various toys such as mice on a string or a rattle will keep them stimulated and strengthen their bond with you. Cats need to scratch things to keep their claws worn down, provide them with a scratching post otherwise they will use your furniture to do so.

• Most adult cats will be toilet trained, either to go outside or to use a litter tray. If it is the latter, make sure that you empty the litter tray daily as cats will use it daily. Cats are very clean animals and they do not like to go to the toilet somewhere that is dirty. Part of keeping cats is to make sure that they are provided with an environment that they will want to live in.

• When caring for cats you will be familiar with their routine and their habits. If the behaviour or routine noticeably changes then keep an eye on the cat and consider taking him to a vet. Cats cannot tell us what is wrong with them but they are creatures or habit which can be used to diagnose any problems.

• When looking after cats, don’t change their routine or their diet too much as it may upset their physical or mental health. If you need to change food then do so gradually, mixing the old food with the new one and slowly adding more of the new type of food until the change is complete. This will avoid any digestive problems such as diarrhoea or constipation.
