How to give your living room a facelift on a budget

Fashion trends don’t just apply to clothing; they apply to interiors as well. Unfortunately, redecorating your house every few months to keep up with the latest design ideas isn’t a viable option – its’ expensive for one thing and takes up a lot more time than buying yourself the latest pair of shoes.

Luckily you don’t have to crack out the credit card or the paint brushes to give your living room a bit of a facelift – little things can make a big difference.
The first thing to do is to work out a colour scheme for your living room; try and work with what you’ve got as much as possible – unless of course you have a whole mish-mash of colours in which case it’s time to have a clear out!
Generally speaking it is good to try and work with no more than four colours in any given space – pick colours that work well together and more importantly colours that make you feel warm, relaxed and cosy – after all you don’t want to give yourself a headache when you come back from work.
Once you have chosen your colour scheme it’s time to start applying it; first of all work on the cushions by re-covering them. All sorts of cheap fabric can be found online and in craft and fabric shops and giving cushions new covers will update the whole room in minutes – it’s fun to do as well. If you’re not a dab hand with a sewing machine then you can always do it by hand.
Make sure you have a cushion in each of the colours you’ve chosen and put them back on the sofa – this will tie in the rest of your items perfectly.
The idea when giving your living room a facelift is to go for colour splashes rather than chucking vibrant shades all over the place – be clever with it, a colourful candle here and there or a cleverly designed photo frame will give hints of design genius without going all out eccentric on your home.
If you have a lot of dark furniture in your living room that is dragging you down there are a couple of things you can do to it; the first is to sand it all down to bring off the dark varnish, you can then rub in some Danish oil which will give the furniture a rich and warm colour without being over powering. If natural wood isn’t your thing try painting the furniture white instead.
Now it’s time to accessorise – lamp shades, throws and trinkets that tie in with your colour scheme can be added discreetly to bring the whole room together.
