How to decorate bookcases

Let’s face it; bookcases are there to hold your books, in most modern homes it is easy for them to look boring and appear as nothing other than a visible storage unit and for the minimalists among us this will no doubt mess with your ‘no clutter’ personality.

If you could make your bookcases more attractive and turn them into a part of the room design you’d do it, right? Well now you can, and here’s how:
The first thing you need to do is remove all your books from your bookcase and give the case a good clean; dust it, spray it, whatever you need to do to it to make it look new. If your bookcases are wooden and you have a white room you make want to think about painting the bookcases to match the room, this will create the illusion of a streamlined design and make the bookcase less obvious.
Now you need to arrange your books in a way that makes sense to you; whether this is by size, colour, author or genre is fine, just do it in a way you will remember where you put everything.
Many book covers are artistic; some are really quite pretty to look at, so if you have a few books that are like this; don’t hide them away to expose just the spine, turn them face-out so you can see the cover on your shelf.
Bookcases can appear stern if they contain just books alone; so why not group your books with a little space in between them and find some vintage or ornate book ends to help separate your books. This will add some much needed decoration to your bookcase and will give the eye something else to look at rather than just book spines and dust.
A little greenery can go a long way as well; now fresh flowers might not be a practical solution as when the petals drop they will get stuck behind your books and cause a mess; but a good imitation plant could sit along the top or in the corner of one of the shelves which adds texture and colour to your new book arrangement.
