Winter Hawk Walks

Not quite ready to get into the festive spirit all guns blazing? Why not ease yourself into all things winter with a Winter Hawk Walk at the Abbey and Battlefield in Battle. From 9am – 12pm and from 1pm-4pm on both days, adults are invited to enjoy a rustic stroll through the countryside whilst free flying hawks soar above. Learn more about the fascinating birds, how to handle them and take part in field flying experience, plus have a nice cup of tea after. Tickets cost £55 per person. Christmas Craft & Gift Fair

From 10am until 4pm, head to The State Hall in Heathfield for a good, old fashioned Christmas Craft & Gift Fair. Tons of high quality, unique bits and bobs will be on offer – and a great deal of them locally produced too. You can expect stalls selling jewellery, ceramics, cards, handbags, cushions, clothing, toys and books, plus much much more. You may just be able to find that elusive gift for your friend who’s got everything. Been super organised and already got all your gifts? Why not along and enjoy a festive mince pie anyway. Free entry.

Festival of Christmas Trees
Friday 9th December – Sunday 11th December 2011
Church of the Holy Cross, Uckfield

Head down the road from Heathfield to the Holy Cross Church in Uckfield for the fun and family-friendly Festival of Christmas Trees. More than 50 trees will be on display – all sponsored and decorated by the community of Uckfield. Lunches and teas will be on sale in the Belmont Centre and there’s free parking just two minutes from the Church. Entrance is free but donations are very welcome. Opening times: 10am – 8pm on Friday 9th, 10am – 6pm on Saturday 10th, and 12 noon – 4pm on Sunday 11th, followed by a Christmas Service.

Pick your own Christmas tree

Northdown Plantation, Five Ashes

Head to the Sussex Trees’ Northdown Plantation in Five Ashes from the first day you crack into your Advent Calendar and pick your very own Christmas tree. The most established of the Sussex Trees plantations, you can find Christmas trees up to 8ft tall here. Visit on the right day and you might even be able to meet Rudolph, some of his other reindeer friends, and the odd festive goat too. For more information, visit the Sussex Trees website.
