Great gadgets for your kitchen
Home cooking is coming back. After the fast food generation of the last decade celebrity ‘chefs’ have been encouraging everyone to cook their own food. And believe it or not it is working.
To cook your own food you must have the right equipment. Aside from all of the obvious appliances like your fridges, freezers and oven etc, there are a few nifty little gadgets that can really optimise the way you work in your own kitchen.
Here is a brief guide to some of the best bits and bobs your kitchen should have.
Ceramic Knife
After using one of these bad boys you will never want to use a normal blade again. A sharp knife is most probably the most important utensil for any cook, it is like your trusty steed and you don’t want it to let you down. The ceramic knife most certainly won’t let you down.
They are incredibly sharp, never blunt and you won’t ever need to sharpen them. They are lightweight and will cut through most things that other knives might struggle with.
Hand Blender
This little beauty is a tremendous accessory. No kitchen should be without one. They are easy to use and easy to clean; you can just stick it in the sink with the rest of your washing up or pop the relevant bits in the dishwasher.
They are great for making your own soups and sauces and are very good for chopping up onions and herbs. Some of the better ones also come with their own mixing beaker and most of them are small and easy to store.
Slow Cooker
Why not return to the days of old and traditional values? The slow cooker is the best way to cook stews and homely soups. It is also great for making stock from the leftover chicken and with the best slow cookers you can take the dish straight out and take it to the table for serving. Just throw your ingredients in and let it go.
The slow cooker is great for cooking anything that we just don’t seem to have the time for these days. Get a slow cooker for yourself and help bring back the Stew.
Compost Bucket
Recycling your food is a great way to feel good about your cooking. Some food goes to you and the leftovers go to your plants. The thought (and smell) of a compost bin in your kitchen may be a bit too much for some people but nowadays you can get ones that have special carbon filters inside the lid which completely eradicate the smell.
You can get some now that look great, work well and are easy to carry to your garden with a brilliantly invented handle on the top.
Microplane Grater
This is quite simply the greatest gadget for any kitchen. It may seem a simple addition but not everyone owns one. They are great for lemon zest, chocolate, cheese and they even come with special attachments for garlic and ginger to avoid you grating your fingertips.
Originally invented to smooth wood, the microplane grater should have a place in every kitchen.
