Getting kittens? Get prepared

Kittens and cats can make fantastic pets; they a loyal but more independent than dogs which means they suit a busy household well as they can be left alone a little longer than dogs without getting lonely.

Kittens are still a massive commitment though and you will need to thoroughly prepare for their arrival before you go and collect them.
Once you have decided you want to get a kitten, you should start preparing for them as soon as you can; to do this there are a few basic things you will need to think about and buy.
The first one is a cat bad; beds come in all different shapes and sizes and some are cheaper than others. By nature kittens like to feel secure when they sleep, either by being up high or by being able to hide, as such you should focus your attention on two styles of cat bed – the Igloo shaped bed provides a lot of comfort and a place to hide for your kitten, most of them also come with a faux fur lining which is nice and soft.
The other popular type of cat bed is one which simply slips over the top of your radiator and is made of a soft blanket material; not only will your kitten be kept nice and warm but he will also be up high which is popular with cats.
Once you’ve decided on a bed you can turn your attention to litter and litter trays; even if you plan on letting your kitten outside to go to the toilet, whilst they’re young they should still have a litter tray otherwise you’re setting yourself up for accidents.
Try and place this somewhere discreet but easy to find for the kitten; lots of people tend to put litter trays in the bathroom as this seems the most logical place. You can also buy covered litter trays which mean your kitten won’t kick litter everywhere and they also prevent bad smells from seeping through the house.
When choosing litter it is a good idea to buy the same or similar litter used by the person who litter trained your cat as this is what they will be used to sniffing out; if this isn’t your preferred litter brand you can always change it once your kitten becomes used to finding the toilet.
Scratching posts filled with catnip are also an essential addition to any household about to buy kittens; unfortunately it is in the nature of the kitten to scratch to maintain their claws – if they are given a productive place to do it then it saves your furniture, and your sanity. Lots of cat scratchers contain catnip which will attract you kitten to that rather than the furniture.
You also need to pick up a few more basics such as feeding bowls and kitten food, a water bowl, and of course some toys.
When you go to collect your kittens make sure you have a cat carrier with old towels or blankets inside as your kitten might be nervous and have an accident or two on the journey home.
