From book cases to landscaping: How to add character to your home
We can’t all be blessed with a period home brimming with character and beautiful architecture. That doesn’t mean that our homes have to be the same as everyone else’s in the street though. Little things can make a huge difference, like antique book cases or a lick of paint. This article offers you some ideas of how to get started.
Furniture
Adding a little colour to the interior of your home is a relatively easy way to add character to your home. Don’t be afraid to show what you love to all who enter. Book cases can be used to display everything from your favourite novels to family photographs, from quirky ornaments to beautiful table lamps. And why not make the book case itself a feature? You can find lots of wonderful second hand furniture, including book cases, in places like the Friday-Ad, without breaking the bank. Investing in other pieces of unique furniture will also help add a bit of character to your home. Antique mirrors, period-style tables, chaise-longues, dramatic chandeliers… the list is endless!
Soft furnishings
Another way to add some character to the inside of your home that is relatively inexpensive is to invest in some eye-catching soft-furnishings. This could mean an art-deco rug or some elaborate floor cushions. Hand-made or embroidered curtains can create a wonderful focal point to any room, without costing a fortune. The important thing to remember when focussing on soft furnishings is not to go over the top. Pick a theme to try and stick to. This way, the room shouldn’t look too busy once you’ve finished jazzing it up.
Add colour to your kitchen
Again, this doesn’t necessarily mean going for a complete re-fit. If your kitchen is painted in neutral, warm colours, this could come in handy when it comes to selling your property. Instead, embrace colour through appliances and accessories. Add a colourful blind in front of the window, invest in a retro-kettle and have some fun with bright crocks and cutlery. And don’t neglect your fridge, either. Old-fashioned and clunky it may be, but covered in photos, artwork and colourful magnets, it could soon become your favourite item in the room.
Go outside
If you’ve got the time and money, one way to add character to your home is to invest in the garden. Whether it’s a tiny patch or an expansive lawn fit for a stately home, a few trees or creative planting here and there can transform it into somewhere that is truly your own.
