Five ways to get a super summer body
Summer is just around the corner – hurrah! It’s been a long time coming but it’s very nearly here. For some of us, although we enjoy the feeling of the sun on our skin, now is the time panic sets in – soon it’ll be all bare feet, legs and arms everywhere. Check out our top five ways to help fend off the body-baring dread and help get your body ready for summer in style.
Think with your feet
Whether you’re headed for a day on the beach in flip-flops or wearing some office-appropriate sandals, the chances are that at some point this summer, your feet will be exposed to watchful eyes. If you’re in the mood for a pampering, you could book yourself in for a pedicure at your local salon. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself person, banish cracked heels by using one of the fabulous overnight foot moisturising creams on the market. Don’t forget your toenails either – for nail colours, think ice cream greens, pinks and oranges. So you!
Take care of your skin
The sun and warmth will dehydrate your skin if you’re not careful. Remember to top up your skin’s hydration levels this summer by using body lotions or moisturisers every day, either in the morning or before you go to sleep (but you do that already, right?) Of course, the most important aspect of summer skin care is to wear sun cream with a sufficient SPF factor, whether you’re fair skinned or not. No one likes sun burn – not only is fluorescent red not a good look, it hurts! The importance of protecting your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays cannot be emphasised enough. Use sun cream to help protect yourself from the damage – and to reduce your risk of skin cancer. If in doubt, get yourself in the shade.
Protect your hair
If you’re lucky, the sun will bring out some natural highlights in your hair, giving you a whole new look. However, the heat from the sun can make your hair brittle and flyaway. As with your skin, the key is to keep your hair hydrated. Try out a leave-in conditioner or an intensive hair mask to bring a bit of bounce back into your life this summer.
Tackle pale legs
Sometimes, the thought of getting those milk bottles out from under their jeans and leggings is just too much to bear, whatever the weather. Fight the fear by planning in advance. If the thought of an all over spray tan fills you with an orange-tinted dread, perhaps you could try one of the gradual self-tanning lotions to give you a naturally sun-kissed look. Some of these, used daily to replace your usual body moisturiser, are light and sensitive enough to use without having to worry about orange streaks. Plus, the gradual nature of these lotions means you won’t have to explain how you’ve gone from ghostly pale to baked terracotta overnight.
Get some exercise!
Okay, unfortunately this isn’t such a quick fix. If, like many of us, you lead a sedentary life chained to the office desk, incorporating some exercise into your daily routine is essential. Not only will this get you well on the way for a super summer body when the time comes, it’ll keep you healthier in general. We’re not even necessarily talking a hardcore gym regime – it’s lots of little things that can make the difference. Cycle or walk to work if you can, or perhaps get off the bus a stop earlier. If you’re really feeling summery, you could even go swimming. If not, then taking Fido on a 20 minute walk every day could also help…
So there you have it, five simple(ish) things to help you get on your way to that super summer body. If you’re looking for a little extra help, why not check out the Health and Beauty section on Friday-Ad.
