Five fun cleaning games – really!

Five fun cleaning games – really!Getting kids (big or little) to help with cleaning up the house is not usually an easy task. Help make it a bit easier for them – not to mention you – by adding a bit of fun to the cleaning jobs around the house. Here are our top five fun cleaning games.

Clothes basketball
Kids rooms can quickly fill up with dirty clothes if they’re left to their own devices. To a lot of kids, the perfect place for a dirty pair of socks is right in the middle of the floor. If it gets too much, why not create an indoor game of basketball? Open up the laundry basket, set a marker to stand by at a reasonable distance, and get throwing those balled up socks, t-shirts and whatever else there is lying around. Rounding up the washing for cleaning has never been so fun. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could make a hoop to hang over the laundry basket, or devise a point-system to give your children a bit of healthy competition.

Dusting races

Dusting – the demon of all housework. Let your kids get in on the dusting fun by making it into a race. This works particularly well if your skirting boards need a good clean. Arm your children with a duster each, grab a stop watch, and whoever gets round their half of the room first, wins! If you’re going for this tactic, make sure the race track is clear beforehand – cleaning children can have a habit of bumping into things.

Washing-up marathon
The old adage ‘slow and steady wins the race’ rings true with this game. What’s the point in getting your kids to help with the washing up if they’re not going to do it properly? Speed isn’t everything in cleaning the dishes – we want those dishes gleaming and we don’t care how long it takes. Offer up an amount of points depending on how dirty the item was at the start, and how clean it is after washing. The person with the most points win. Awesome.

Bedroom treasure hunt
Cleaning bedrooms is much more satisfying when you’re doing it to look for something. Encourage your children to tidy their dens by hiding a little treat somewhere in the mess. Try and hide it somewhere that won’t be found in the first thirty seconds though, as you may find the interest in cleaning wanes after the treat has been found…

Musical chores
Sometimes the simplest way to make cleaning fun is to give it a soundtrack. Less of a cleaning game and more of a motivational tool, sticking some upbeat, sing-along music on in the background instantly makes cleaning more enjoyable. If you’re really into it, you could create a cleaning dance routine. Everybody, 1,2,3, dust!
