Driveway ideas

Driveway ideasHaving a driveway at the front of your home will not only make your life easier, it will also make your property more attractive to a lot of potential buyers, should you ever want to sell your house. This is the case particularly if you live in a city or town where parking may be at a premium.

You may think that installing a driveway on your property will detract from the external appearance of your home. This need not be the case with so many different (and attractive) styles of driveway available.

First of all, you need to consider what you want your driveway surface to be. Some of the most popular choices include gravel, asphalt or concrete. When choosing the right surface for you, you obviously need to consider what it’s going to look like but there are other things to think about too. Budget is an influencing factor, as with all home improvements – gravel is often the cheapest so perhaps more appropriate for long driveways. It is also worth considering how much maintenance you are willing to put in. You may think that gravel is the most attractive, but be prepared to spend time raking the stones and leveling the surface every now and then. Concrete may eradicate this problem – but unless you are going to have one smooth surface (as opposed to a concrete slab pattern), be prepared to get down on your hands and knees to weed out the gaps between the slabs.

It is possible, after you have had your driveway put in place, to brighten it up even further by landscaping around it. Although you will not be tampering with the surface of the driveway itself, you can transform the area surrounding it with plants to make the most of the space, without spending too much money. Think carefully about which sorts of plants you are choosing. Steer clear of trees that may grow particularly large, as their roots could cause structural damage to your brand new drive! If low maintenance is what you’re after, try hardy bushes and flowers that do not need too much looking after. Choose plants that flower at different times of the year, or evergreen trees and bushes, to keep the colour there all year round.
