Decorating ideas for your child’s room

Decorating ideas for your child's roomA kid’s bedroom is a great place for their personality shine. Decorating a room to their tastes will give them a room that they are proud of and love to spend time in. These tips for decorating your child’s room could give you some ideas of how to brighten up the room without breaking the bank.

Firstly, decide on what colour to paint your room. Pink for girls and blue for boys is a bit stereotypical, but if it’s the colour that your children want for their room, then why not?! It’s a good idea to be sensible though – try and choose a colour that will suit your children for a few years to come. That way, when their tastes change, redecorating the room will involve investing in a few bits here and there, rather than a complete overhaul.

Consider carefully the type of paint to use in the room, as well as the colour. Bright colours will energise, whilst paler colours create a more relaxed atmosphere. Whatever the colour, if your children are young or old enough to make a mess, the chances are they will. If you can, try and go for a stain and scrub resistant paint, which will make it easier to clean marks off the walls. If you want your children to be able to enjoy their room as quick as possible, it’s a good idea to use a low odour paint, so that new paint smell doesn’t do them damage.

Giving your child’s
room that personal touch is not just about what’s on the walls. Accessories are a great way to give the room a fun feel without being too permanent. Throws and cushions can provide a bit of colour – and shouldn’t be too expensive to replace when your daughter decides she doesn’t want ponies everywhere anymore. A pin board is another great accessory, giving children somewhere to display their artwork, photos or certificates. Magazine cut-outs of their favourite characters also look great on these boards, and can be changed at the drop of the hat.

If a kid’s
room needs anything, it’s storage. Tall shelves can store a lot in a small amount of floor space, but stacking things too high means your child could have an accident trying to reach something on the top shelf. If there’s room under the bed, there are some great boxes or drawers you can get that are perfect for hiding things away. Fixed shelves with hooks underneath, or hooks on the back of the door, are a great place to hang dressing gowns or foldable storage solutions.
