Cleaning tips: How to clean jewellery

Cleaning tips: How to clean jewelleryCleaning jewellery is a great way to keep your precious accessories looking their best without having to fork out on brand new pieces. Whether it’s an antique gold ring or a sparkling diamond necklace, this article offers some great tips for cleaning jewellery and keeping it sparkling.

Diamonds
Cleaning diamonds can be difficult because they are natural attractors for grease and dirt. To keep your diamonds looking their shiny best, prevention is often the best method. If you have a diamond ring, remember to remove it whenever you’re doing the washing up or having a shower. If your diamond does appear to have lost some of its brilliance, the most important thing to remember when cleaning diamonds is to not use abrasive cleaners. These can damage the diamond, as they can most other items of jewellery. One of the most popular ways to clean diamonds is to use warm water and mild liquid detergent. Soak the diamonds and, if necessary, use a soft brush that won’t scratch to brush away the dirt. Dry the diamond piece of jewellery off with a soft cloth once you’re finished.

Gold and platinum
For cleaning gold and platinum, a similar solution of dish soap and water should do the trick. Dip the jewellery in the solution and then rinse in warm running water to prevent any damage. Buff the gold or platinum with a lint-free soft cloth until your jewellery has been restored to its shiny self. Alternatively, you can clean your gold or platinum using a cleaning solution bought from a jewellery store.

Silver
The best way to prevent your silver jewellery from becoming tarnished is to wear it as often as possible, so get your bling on. If your silver does need cleaning, special silver polishes can be bought – make sure that it is nonabrasive before using. Work the polish into the stains with a soft cloth and then wipe away any excess. Buff the silver until its shiny and that should do the trick.

Pearls and other porous stones
Extra care must be taken when cleaning things like pearls, emeralds and rubies. Steer clear of cleaning solutions and use only a soft damp cloth. If your jewellery looks like it’s going to need a bit more work, it’s recommended to take them to a professional to have them cleaned.

Ultrasonic jewellery cleaning
Some jewellers will offer a cleaning service, using something called ultrasonic cleaning. This method removes tarnish from various different sorts of jewellery by using ultrasound waves and chemicals that cling to the particles of dirt. If ever you are unsure about which cleaning products can be used on your different items of jewellery, it’s always best to ask for and expert’s advice. Better to be safe than sorry!
