A Guide to student housing
With the nations A-Level students finding out their results this week and university courses becoming oversubscribed quicker than ever, there is naturally going to be a mad panic when it comes to finding accommodation.
University halls only have a limited number of places available and the best ones tend to fill up quickly; so if you miss out on halls or you’re entering the clearing process and don’t get in quick enough then you’ll need to have a back-up plan with regards to housing.
Every city has student housing areas; some more than others, but it’s pretty much like sharing a flat or a house just with other students.
By nature a lot of these houses tend to get badly treated by their uni-going tenants so don’t expect luxury when you visit them, but they can be brilliant fun as well, so keep an open mind.
Speaking to your university directly is often the first port of all when it comes to finding accommodation, and they will do all they can to help you find a room in another student house. A little flexibility will be required though as you may find yourself housed with older students than yourself who just happen to have a spare room in their house – so don’t assume you’ll be placed with like-minded freshers.
When you do find a placement you need to be prepared that your new housemates will already be settled into certain routines so you’ll have to make a little effort to fit seamlessly into their way of living – without compromising your own happiness of course.
By in large most university students are very friendly and welcoming; they’ll all have been in the same position as you and will know exactly how scared and excited you’re feeling. So as long as you don’t insist on spending 23 hours a day hidden in your room you’ll be sure to make loads of new friends.
The dynamics in student houses vary from one to the next but it will be expected that each housemate will have their own shelf in the fridge; if yours is at the top make sure none of your food gets left to rot and drip all over your housemates butter – this won’t be appreciated and to be honest it’s not a pleasant habit to get into.
The key to a harmonious experience in student housing is to have a little consideration of others around you.
